Tom Harrell, ha raccolto una messe di premi e riconoscimenti che pochi musicisti oggi viventi possono vantare , sia come trombettista che come compositore : classificatosi per ben tre volte come miglior trombettista di jazz dell’anno dalla rivista Downbeat Magazine, é conosciuto nel mondo intero per le sontuose ed complesse melodie che ha composto e che gli hanno valso la fama di uno dei più grandi compositori dell’ultima generazione : un suo album ha vinto un oscar indetto dalla celebre rivista americana Entertainment Weekly come"miglior jazz album dell’anno" dal Entertainment Weekly, la Grammy nomination (per il suo album Time's Mirro, 1999). La sua peculiarità é quella di approcciare i brani musicali con una visuale artitstica pittorica, con colori e sfumature che innanzitutto pervadono la sua mente . Tom Harrell a tal proposito ha sempre sostenuto : “mi piace pensare la mia musica come un gioco di colori con un loro movimento cadenzato” ed anche "mi piace creare bellezza e trasportare gli ascoltatori insieme verso la gioia ed il piacere della miscellanea dei vari colori e sfumature “. Sebbene affetto da una profonda disabilità psichica la sua carriera si svolge sul palcoscenico di tutto il mondo.Prima di dedicarsi alla carriera solista ha registrato e suonato con il gotha del jazz mondiale. Ricordiamo tra gli altri : Stan Kenton's orchestra ,Woody Herman's big band (1970-1971), Azteca (1972), the Horace Silver Quintet (1973-1977), the Sam Jones big band, the Lee Konitz Nonet (1979-1981), George Russell, the Mel Lewis Orchestra (1981), and Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Ronnie Cuber, Bob Brookmeyer, Lionel Hampton, Bob Berg, Bobby Shew, Phil Woods Quintet . Ha registrato a proprio nome con le più prestigiose etichette mondiali come Pinnacle, Blackhawk, Criss Cross, SteepleChase, Contemporary Records, Chesky, and RCA. In 2008 l’etichetta italiana Abeat ha pubblicato due cd di straordinaria caratura artistica : “humanity” con il pianista Dado Moroni and " the cube" con un quintetto italiano ( Dado Moroni al piano, Andrea Dulbecco –vibrafono e marimba, Riccardo Fioravanti-contrabbasso, e l’ausilio di due batteristi insieme, Enzo Zirilli e Stefano Bagnoli ).

Tom Harrell, named jazz trumpeter of the year three times by Downbeat Magazine, is known for the gorgeous, intricate melodies he composes.A salient constant in Tom Harrell's career has been his commitment to advancing his artistry. Recording as a leader since 1976, he has racked up numerous jazz magazine awards, such as top composer and trumpeter, "best jazz album of the year" by Entertainment Weekly, and a Grammy nomination (for his 1999 big band album Time's Mirror). He approaches the tunes as a visual artist, with color and shading foremost in his mind. "I like to think of my music as a play of colors with a groove," he says. "I like to create beauty and bring listeners together to enjoy the blend of colors. Tom Harrell (born June 16, 1946) . However he has a disability which profoundly affects his life away from the stage. Tom Harrell began playing the trumpet at age eight. In 1969 he graduated from Stanford University with a music composition degree and joined Stan Kenton's orchestra . After leaving Kenton, Harrell played with Woody Herman's big band (1970-1971), Azteca (1972), the Horace Silver Quintet (1973-1977), the Sam Jones big band, the Lee Konitz Nonet (1979-1981), George Russell, the Mel Lewis Orchestra (1981), and Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra. In addition, he recorded albums with Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Ronnie Cuber, Bob Brookmeyer, Lionel Hampton, Bob Berg, Bobby Shew, among others. From 1983-1989 he was a pivotal member of the Phil Woods Quintet Since 1989 Harrell has led his own groups and recorded under his own name for such record labels as Pinnacle, Blackhawk, Criss Cross, SteepleChase, Contemporary Records, Chesky, and RCA. In 2008 the italian label Abeat publishes two extraordinary cds : “humanity” with the pianist Dado Moroni and " the cube" with an italian popular jazz quintet ( Dado Moroni as pianist, Andrea Dulbecco -vibes, Riccardo Fioravanti-doublebass, and the two drummers Enzo Zirilli and Stefano Bagnoli together).
