ARTIST'S INFO
Zaza Desiderio

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1980, Isaias “Zaza” Desiderio is a professional drummer, percussionist, composer and arranger and a member of the Order of Musicians of Brazil (OMB).

At the age of eight, he started playing the guitar; at sixteen, he became a professional drummer and began playing in local bands. Strongly influenced by Latin and jazz rhythms, the carioca drummer has a bold and precise style, connecting with audiences through the suave and energetic sounds of samba.

For the past few years, Zaza has been one of the most in-demand drummers in both Rio de Janeiro and France. His unique talents have granted him many opportunities to perform in large venues.

His easy-going personality, artistic gifts, maturity and natural ease in many different musical styles have allowed him to collaborate with numerous artists from home and abroad, including Milton Nascimento, Alma Thomas, Yamandu Costa, Base & Brass, Idriss Boudrioua, Big Joe Manfra, Ray Lema, Philippe Baden Powel, Nelson Veras, Frédéric Viale, Raul de Souza, Marcia Maria, Maestro Paulo Moura, Mauricio Einhorn, Harvey Wainapell, Leny Andrade, Cliff Korman, Rio Jazz Orchestra, Luíza Possi and Maria Gadu.

A first-call musician for Brazilian music and theatre (TV Globo and TV Record), he has played on television series and was also recruited to record the soundtrack for the movie “A Alma de Uma Orquestra” (The Soul of an Orchestra). A collaboration with the Rio Jazz Orquestra, the movie was produced by American film director Ronald Knighten.

In 2007, he took part in the Odery & Modern Drummer Festival competition and came in first place in Rio before moving onto the final round. Fortunately, his talents aren’t for Brazil alone to enjoy! After touring France with the renowned tenor saxophonist Idriss Boudrioua, he fell in love with the European continent (and France, in particular) and moved to Paris. Since 2010, he has been living in Lyon, where his flexible yet incisive style has already captured the media’s attention, earning him a special award at the 2012 Jazz(s) RA competition for his role in the Dreisam Trio, one of his France-based projects.

In 2014, he was invited by the Apple-Celery-Coconutmazing Keystone Big Band to share the main stage at the Jazz à Vienne festival in a show featuring the great Quincy Jones and in 2015, he was invited by Mr Day to share the main stage at the Jazz à Vienne festival in a show featuring Pharrel Williams!

In addition to his immeasurable experience, the carioca drummer carries the entire range of swinging samba rhythms and sounds stemming from all corners of Brazil within him.
